Television

Q: What channels do I get?
A:
Check our channel listing guide for a complete list of current channels offered by Southern VT Cable.

Q: My television does not display all the channels I have ordered. What do I do?
A:
On most television sets, you will have to auto-program your tuner. This is accessible from the Menu command on your remote control or set itself.

Q: What premium channels do you offer?
A:
We currently offer HBO, Movie Channel and Showtime, with more choices coming in the near future.

Q: I just bought an HDTV. When can I use it?
A:
We are indeed planning to offer High Definition TV and Digital Cable. When details are available, you will see it here on our website.

High-Speed Internet

Q: When can I get installed?
A:
If you are a current Southern VT Cable customer, installation is quick and easy and may be scheduled within 2 business days.

Q: I don’t know anything about the computer! What do I need to know for installation?
A:
Abosolutely nothing. If you can come up with an email name and password for yourself, you can leave the installation to us. We will even show you how to use your high-speed Internet and configure all necessary software and hardware for you.

Q: I own more than 1 PC. Can I have more than 1 computer connected?
A:
With the installation of a small home network, it is possible. In most cases, extra hardware such as a router or wireless access point is necessary and available from Southern VT Cable.

Q: I can’t get online, what do I do?
A:
First check your modem or cable TV. On your modem, verify that your “Cable” and/or “Sync” lights are on and solid. If they are not and your cable TV reception is poor or unviewable, contact our office. If your lights are on and solid and TV reception is present, power cycle your cable modem. Do this by simply unplugging the power, and plugging it back in again, then reboot your PC or router.

Q: What is DSL? Is cable better?
A:
DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is a broadband solution offered via telephone. There are some drawbacks of this service, most of which revolve around telephone line quality and distance from their distribution office. Almost anywhere there is television cable, you can get high-speed cable Internet reliablly. In addition, installation is done professionally and local technical support is available.

Q: What is my IP address?
A:
Your IP address is a number assigned to your computer from our servers which allows you to connect to the Internet. Without this number, you will not be allowed to connect. Addresses of 169.x.x.x are generated by your operating system and mean nothing to the network, thus you will not connect to the Internet.

Q: Can I have a static IP address?
A:
Static addresses are available for purchase. Business customers with PRO service are automatically granted IP addresses. If you are not a commercial customer, please contact us with your needs.

Q: Do you offer virus protection?
A:
Email is scanned for viruses as they are received by our mail server. However, it is STRONGLY recommended that you impliment your own anti-virus solution locally on your PC or network. Check our NETiquette section for more info.

Q: Do I really need a firewall?
A:
Yes. Any security you can possibly impliment on your personal computer or network is useful. Check our NETiquette section for more info.

Q: What about pop-ups?
A:
Pop-ups are a problem for everyone. You can do 2 things about them. First, run and get in the habit of running spyware removal utilities such as Ad Aware as part of your maintenance routine. Next you may also run pop-up blocking utilities, such as Pop-Up Stopper or Google’s blocker.

Email

Q: I am getting an error message that says “Relaying Prohibited”, what do I do?
A:
Most likely, you are trying to send out mail using a mail server other than Southern VT Cable’s. You have two options. Your first is to use our mail server to send out your mail. You may check your settings in our Customer Care, Technical Support section. The other option is to contact the provider whose email server you wish to use and obtain any settings they require.

Q: What software can I use for email?
A:
Most email clients are capable of display your email through Southern VT Cable. Some of the more popular are Outlook/Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Communicator. Apple OSX also has an excellent mail client installed.

Q: Can I check my email if I am not home?
A:
You can access your email anywhere on the planet with an internet connection and web browser. Simply visit SVCABLE.NET and click on the web mail icon on the homepage to access your account. Remember, your account name is per this example: account@svcable.net.

Q: What about SPAM?
A:
Spam is an enormous problem. We are constantly improving our system to combat this difficult problem. Currently, we relay email across multiple black lists to ensure removal of most SPAM. We will be implementing new methods soon to reduce SPAM even further. As a general rule of thumb, never give your email address out unless you know it will not be used for marketing purposes or resold.

General PC

Q: I own a PC that does not meet the system requirements. Can I still install high-speed Internet?
A:
Although not recommended, it is possible to install broadband on an older PC or Mac. The nature by which your computer connects to high-speed Internet is different than dial-up. Your operating system may not be efficient enough to run on a high-speed network, thus your connection may suffer or not work at all. If you are unsure if your PC will work, please let us know prior to your installation.
